CONSUME, an immersive and interactable art installation by Regan Boyce. “Where Happiness Comes in Packaging” : Enter Through the Gift confronts the commodification and worship of brands, names and logos. Whether a statement of wealth, success or obsession has the ‘Brand’ become more important than what it is stamped onto?
Consume takes inspiration from both contemporary and vintage consumerism, 50’s/60’s Americana meets the modern development of ‘HYPE’ culture. The install conveys a fun utopian aesthetic with an underlying dystopian concept where all that’s important is the packaging: repetitions of the same brown paper bags, logo and character are combined with a lack of further information for a ‘consumer’.
‘Enter Through The Gift Shop’ was installed as part of Park Royals Design District for London Design Festival 2023. Consisting of a space taken over by the ‘brand’ consumers could only base their purchases on the packaging and aesthetic of the brand itself.
Enter Through The Gift Shop is Boyce’s first major install of ‘Consume’. Self designed brand identity, aesthetics, props and install build, hand screen-printed brown paper bags prints as well as the production of mystery items included with the bags.
Each bag contained a work by one of the contributing artists, thanks to artists: Juliet GIbbs, Brooke Fitzsimons, Harry Hanock, Lou Hart, Gil Wedam, Marius David, Chino Ridge. & Regan Boyce.
